WHEREAS, the Yunnan Province, known for its beautiful landscapes, mountainous regions, mild climate and rich multi-ethnic heritage, has long benefited from the flow of immigrants throughout its history, which continue to shape the fabric of the region; and,
WHEREAS, since its establishment one hundred years ago, the Yunnan Provincial Library, located in Kunmang, China-the capital of the Yunnan Province--has been striving to describe, preserve, and provide access to its extensive and priceless information resources pertaining to the long history of interactions among different ethnic minorities in the region; and,
WHEREAS, in the event of its first centennial celebration, the Yunnan Provincial Library is hosting an international conference with the theme of "building an information society of cultural and ethnic multiplicity;" and,
WHEREAS, the goal of the International Conference for Yunnan Provincial Library's 100th Anniversary is to bring together librarians, information engineers, educators as well as experts and professionals in other fields, from both China and abroad, to exchange ideas and share research findings about multiethnic culture, resource development, and information sharing; and,
WHEREAS, the International Conference for Yunnan Provincial Library's 100th Anniversary will provide a forum for scholars from different traditions and backgrounds to share their views and perspectives on how to preserve and promote the traditional culture of ethnic minorities in a multilevel, multicultural, and multiethnic information society; and,
WHEREAS, the International Conference for Yunnan Provincial Library's 100th Anniversary will serve to generate valuable ideas for advancing services to disadvantaged social groups and rural developments in the province of Yunnan;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognizes the Yunnan Provincial Library for its longevity, leadership and vision and congratulates the library on the notable occasion of its 100th Anniversary.
