WHEREAS, on May 28th we celebrate Memorial Day, a day on which we remember fallen heroes, and a day to give thanks for the bravery of those who have served our country; and
WHEREAS, next Monday, May 28th, Lawrenceville will host its 110th Lawrenceville Memorial Day Parade, which and is among the oldest Memorial Day Celebrations in the country, and traces its’s start to civil war veterans, who were the first organizers of this parade; and
WHEREAS, managed by the Lawrenceville Memorial Day Parade Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the memory of the deceased Veterans who paid the ultimate price with their lives defending American freedom; and
WHEREAS, thanks to the generosity of the Lawrenceville community, this parade has continued due to the donations and fundraisers held by the community to support the expenses of the annual parade; and
WHEREAS, American flags will line the parade route, which has been extended thanks to the participation of more than 65 groups, including military color guard, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts troops that will march in the parade beginning at 10 AM at the intersection of 36th and Butler Street ; and
WHEREAS, thousands of people will line Butler Street to pay respect to the men and women who lost their lives serving our country, arriving early to secure a good vantage point along the parade route; and
WHEREAS, the parade will conclude at the Allegheny Cemetery entrance near 47th Street, where several hundred people will assemble near the Soldiers Memorial for a solemn service and ceremonial wreath laying; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor the sacrifices of the individuals who served and continue to serve our country, and thank the Lawrenceville Memorial Day Parade Association and the community who continue to hold the annual Parade; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, May 28th, to be “Lawrenceville Memorial Parade Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
