WHEREAS, Deaconess Kathryn Georgia Sellers was born on September 13, 1940, the beloved daughter of Leroy M. Gordon and Caroline Gordon, and is the seventh of eleven children raised in the West End of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, she was educated at Thaddeus Stephens School, Langley High School, and South Hills High School, and later married the late Elijah Sellers, with whom she built a loving family; and,
WHEREAS, Deaconess Sellers is the proud mother of 9 children, grandmother of 21, great-grandmother of 33, and great-great-grandmother of 8, and she has also provided child care to countless other children in the community, extending her love and care far beyond her own family; and,
WHEREAS, in June of 1956, she moved to the Beltzhoover neighborhood, where she raised her children, built lasting roots, and continues to reside today, embodying the spirit of family and community; and,
WHEREAS, she worked diligently at Kaufmann’s Department Store in Downtown Pittsburgh until her retirement in 2005, and in retirement she continued her service to the community by working as a “Nanna” with The Brashear Association’s Nanna Transportation Program, addressing absenteeism and ensuring children’s safe passage to school; and,
WHEREAS, Deaconess Sellers has been a devout Christian and lifelong member of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, faithfully serving for 69 years in numerous roles, including on the Steward Board, Stewardess Board, as Head Usher of the Usher Board, in the Parish Nurses Guild, as Missionary President, and as Director of the Young People’s Division (YPD); and,
WHEREAS, her unwavering faith, steadfast service, and profound love for her family and neighbors stand as a shining example of resilience, compassion, and leadership in Pittsburgh; and,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Deaconess Kathryn Georgia Sellers for her 85 years of life, love, and service; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does herby declare Saturday, September 13, 2025, to be “Deaconess Kathryn Georgia Sellers Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
