Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Pennsylvania Resources Council, Inc. and the Clean Pittsburgh Commission for teaching and encouraging students to recognize the need to respect their environment; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, October 15 , 2010, to be “Stash the Trash Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Stash the Trash  is an annual event of the Pennsylvania Resources Council, Inc. (PRC) to have school students play an active role in keeping their neighborhoods clean and litter free by participating in ongoing litter pick-ups on school property ; and,
 
WHEREAS, this year marks the 18th year of the Stash the Trash program and PRC is partnering with the Clean Pittsburgh Commission, the City of Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh Public Schools to provide support to schools for this one-day event by providing bags and gloves and to encourage them to implement a year round clean-up effort at their school; and,
   
WHEREAS, this year, Stash the Trash Day will be held on Friday October 15th when over 3,000 public, private and parochial school students from approximately 35 schools throughout Pittsburgh will take part in a citywide Redd-Up effort to pick-up litter on school grounds with the goal of teaching children the importance of not littering and to make sure their schoolyards remain litter free year round; and,
 
WHEREAS,  it has long been recognized that participation in these types of service projects help foster a sense of caring and responsibility among students and encourages them to become the next generation of caretakers of our environment; and,
 
WHEREAS, the October 15th event will kick-off a weekend long effort held twice a year in and around Pittsburgh to Redd-Up city neighborhoods where  over 80 city neighborhoods have signed on to participate in the massive two-day clean-up and beautification effort which may result in the largest Redd-Up effort in Pittsburgh with an estimated 5,000 participants; and,
