Whereas, one week ago, on May 3, 2005, a team of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) students from the Tepper School of Business, the Heinz School of Public Policy, Carnegie Institute of Technology and the School of Architecture won first place in the JPMorgan Chase Community Development competition in New York City:

Advisors: Terri Baltimore, Hill House Association;
Louis Rico-Gutierrez, College of Fine Arts;
Jerry Paytas, Heinz School Center for Economic Development; Kristen Kurland, Heinz School and School of Architecture; Bob Gradeck, Heinz School for Economic Development; Tyrone Wrice, Heinz School Career Services; Martin Black, Heinz School Career Services; and
Whereas, the competition is by invitation only, whereby this was the first time that CMU and Pittsburgh were represented; and
Whereas, the CMU team produced a detailed business plan, policy strategy and a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifiable urban building design--a comprehensive proposal for bringing a non-profit food store to the Hill District; and
Whereas, the intent of the JPMorgan Chase competition is to give students, schools and communities an opportunity to met out much-needed development projects; and
Whereas, the team collaborated with the Hill House Association, numerous Hill District residents and organizations, CMU faculty from different departments and professionals around the city who provided their time and expertise; and
Whereas, the first place award of $25,000 will go to the Hill House Association as seed money for implementation of the project.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, Pittsburgh City Council congratulates the team of Carnegie Mellon University students who won first place in the 2005 JP Morgan Chase Community Development completion in New York City with a proposal that recognizes the Hill District for its economic potential as a key neighborhood for the successful redevelopment of our city.
