Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the important milestone of the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, and does hereby declare Wednesday, June 6, 2012, to be “The Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council 30th Anniversary Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, founded by one volunteer in her home and incorporated in 1982, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council has grown from a grass-roots beginning to its status today as a national leader in adult education and family literacy; and
 
WHEREAS, last year, with forty staff members and 500 essential volunteers, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council provided services to 14,000 children and adults throughout Pittsburgh and Allegheny County that gave the courage, confidence and character necessary to help make the world a better place; and
 
WHEREAS, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council plays a vital role in removing the barriers within our society that make a positive change in the lives of both past and present graduates who are now working, attending college and helping others to achieve their goals; and
 
WHEREAS, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council offers remarkable opportunities for individuals to develop positive values and to contribute to society as leaders, thinkers, and responsible citizens where adults and families acquire reading, writing, math, workforce skills, and computer skills so they may reach their fullest potential in life and participate productively in their community; and
 
WHEREAS, the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council provides direct instruction to adult learners, promotes public awareness of adult and family literacy issues, and provides leadership skills is one of only five nonprofit organizations in Pittsburgh to be certified under the Standards for Excellence of the PA Association of Nonprofit Organizations; and
 
WHEREAS, on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, past and present students, teachers and volunteers gathered at the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council's expanded Downtown Center and new agency headquarters to celebrate its 30th Anniversary;
