Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Pittsburgh City Council joins in the celebration of the 13th biennial Childs-Chiles Family Reunion. WHEREAS, Within the Keystone State, the 13th biennial Childs-Chiles Family Reunion is being hosted in The City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from Friday, August 13, 2004 through  Sunday, August 15, 2004 at the Sheraton at Station Square.

 

WHEREAS, Born in 1810, the patriarch of this Childs-Chiles reunion is the South Carolinian, Winston Chiles, Sr.

 

WHEREAS, The spelling variations of the family name has many tales but not as many as the Childs-Chiles family tree would bear!

 

WHEREAS, In 1981, the first Childs-Chiles Family Reunion, held in Greenwood, South Carolina, was initiated and planned by Luvenia Hodges and the Washington, D.C. and Greenwood, South Carolina families.  Luvenia Hodges was unanimously acclaimed the first Childs-Chiles Reunion president and commended for her leadership in creating the first family reunion.  Calvin Chiles was named vice-president, and James Chiles was named secretary/treasurer.

 

WHEREAS, In the early-mid 1900's, the second weekend of August was traditionally the time when blacks who had migrated to the north would return back to Greenwood, South Carolina for the "Homecoming" or "Big Meeting."  And so, by tradition the Childs-Chiles Family Reunion is held on the second weekend in August.

 

WHEREAS, This is the first time that the Childs-Chiles Family Reunion has been celebrated in Pittsburgh.  The Pittsburgh host committee is chaired by Victor Tatum with tireless help from Childs-Chiles family committee members:  Edna Chiles Rhodes, Michael Crumpton, Donna Frye, Pamela McIver, Fannie Moye, Jeffrey Moye, Colleen Neville, Victor Tatum, Jr., and Toilynne Tatum-Aitchison.
