Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh wishes to express its gratitude and offer its most sincere commendation for the on-going efforts of Pittsburgh Community Services, Inc., in its dedicated fight against both the causes and the effects of poverty within the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS Pittsburgh Community Services, Inc. (PCSI), through its many and varied advocacy campaigns, seeks to empower individuals, families, and communities by providing quality services so that all might achieve sustainable economic development and an improved quality of life both within their personal spheres and within their communities at large; and

WHEREAS PCSI offers a myriad of direct program services and activities through the Community Action Center, Project Life Line, the Community Action Learning Center, the Neighborhood Safety Program, the Supported Engagement Program, and through its Hunger Trust conduits; and

WHEREAS PCSI receives its funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development's Community Services Block Grant program, along with the City of Pittsburgh's Community Development Block Grant program; and

WHEREAS the month of May has been named "Community Action" month, thereby marking this time as particularly appropriate to focus our attention on how to better reduce poverty within the United States; and

WHEREAS PCSI's Executive Director, Cecelia Jenkins, in an attempt to connect this nation-wide focus on ending poverty with the aims of PCSI has stated, "Our challenge is to commit to empowering the manifestation of hope and change by diligently and efficiently moving resources where they will be most useful to those whose lives have been impacted by the causes of poverty;" and

WHEREAS in celebration and recognition of 23 years of service as the mandated community action agency for the City of Pittsburgh, PCSI will host its 23rd Annual Meeting to be held at 5:00 p.m. on May 23rd, 2006, at the Highmark Building, located in Downtown, Pittsburgh; and

WHEREAS this meeting will be free and open to the public, with Pittsburgh's newly-elected Mayor, Bob O'Connor, presiding as the guest speaker.
