WHEREAS, beginning in 2006, April will be the Month of the Young Child (MOYC), an annual celebration that started as the Week of the Young Child in 1971, sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children; and
WHEREAS, the Month of the Young Child will begin with a kick-off event on April 2, 2006 at the Pittsburgh Children's Museum, with this year's theme being "Building Better Futures For All Children Through Play,"; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the MOYC is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to support the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs; and
WHEREAS, locally, MOYC is sponsored by the Pittsburgh Affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (PAEYC), an organization for early childhood professionals; and
WHEREAS, PAEYC's Month of the Young Child goals include providing a public forum in which parents and others can gather information about the importance of positive early childhood experiences and provide activities and events that are inclusive of all children and their families; and
WHEREAS, additional goals of MOYC include serving as a resource and referral source for early childhood educators, families and communities and bringing together a variety of organizations, agencies, and individuals who have an interest in serving young children and their families; and
WHEREAS, PAEYC, through the MOYC, celebrates children and the organizations and individuals who work with them and understands that early childhood experiences prepare children to become well-educated, informed, and effective citizens.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby commends the Pittsburgh Affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children for their efforts to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families through the Month of the Young Child.
