Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize , commend and congratulate nationally known, acclaimed and purely Pittsburgh Rob Rogers for his award winning work and receipt of the National Press Foundation's Berryman Award on February 11, 2016; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, February 16, 2016, to be " ROB ROGERS DAY " in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Rob Rogers, the award winning editorial cartoonist for the Pittsburgh Post- Gazette has once again distinguished himself by being chosen to receive the Berryman Award for Editorial Cartooning by the National Press Foundation; and,

 

WHEREAS, the National Press Foundation’s mission is to increase journalists’ knowledge of complex issues to improve public understanding, recognizing and encouraging excellence in journalism through its awards and programs. The Berryman Award was named in memory of Clifford and James Berryman, the father-son Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonists by their daughter and sister, Florence Berryman, former Art Critic of the Washington Post. The prize recognizes work that exhibits power to influence public opinion, plus good drawing and striking effect and carries a $2500 award which was given to Rob at the National Press Foundation’s Annual Awards Dinner in Washington , D.C.; and,

 

WHEREAS, Rob’s winning portfolio included cartoons about police facing video cameras, the Charlie Hebdo killings, the Hilary Clinton - Bernie Sanders presidential campaign, Pope Francis’s stand on climate change, and the proliferation of gun sales in the United States. According to the Judges, Rogers has a vivid visual style that invites you in. He tackles really heavy issues with a light-handed visual touch. He leaves no confusion about his point of view, he knows what he wants to say; and,

 

WHEREAS, Rob Rogers adds the Berryman Award to his multiple Golden Quill Awards, the 1995 National Headliner Award, the Year’s Best Cartoonist from THE WEEK magazine and the 2000 and 2013 Overseas Press Club’s Nast Award. He’s curated 3 national cartoon art exhibits, has a 25 year published retrospective called No Cartoon Left Behind: The Best of Rob Rogers, exhibited at Toonseum and was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist in 1999. In 2015, Rob Rogers released a cartoon collection called Mayoral Ink: Cartooning Pittsburgh’s Mayors.
