Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognizes the ATHENA Award finalists, Mary Austin, Joyce Bender, Michele DeWitt, Joan Ellenbogen and Gretchen Haggerty and congratulates Kate Dewey as the winner of the 2008 ATHENA Award .

WHEREAS, Athena International was founded in 1982, by Martha Mertz, the only female member of the Lansing, MI Chamber of Commerce,  to achieve a balance in the faces and voices of leadership and to recognize, support, develop, and honor the leadership of outstanding business and professional women  leaders; and ,
 
WHEREAS, the Athena Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative in their profession; who provide valuable service to their communities by improving the lives of others; who actively assist women in achieving their full leadership potential; and whose focus on mentorship distinguishes it from other awards recognizing women in business; and,
WHEREAS,  the Athena Award Program of Greater Pittsburgh, hosted by the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, gathered more than 800 people on September 8, 2008, to celebrate the achievements and services of six distinguished finalists who embody the spirit  of the Greek goddess Athena, known for her strength and wisdom; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Athena Award finalists, Mary K. Austin, an Associate Counsel at UPMC Health System; Joyce A. Bender, Chief Executive Officer at Bender and Associates International, Inc.; Kate Dewey, Principal of Dewey & Kaye; Michele DeWitt, Vice President, Repair, Replacement and Automation Services at Westinghouse Electric Company, LLC; Joan Ellenbogen, Managing Partner at CrawfordEllenbogen LLC, and Gretchen R. Haggerty, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at United States Steel Corporation, each have made significant contributions to their professions, their communities, and to mentoring and developing women leaders and join the ranks of quiet heroes across the nation and world who are advocating on behalf of and empowering women leaders; and,
 
WHEREAS, Kate Dewey was bestowed the 2008 ATHENA Award on September 8, 2008, for her more than 35 years of direct experience with a variety of nonprofit organizations, foundations, public agencies and corporations at the local, state, and national level, thus joining the ranks of 17 other honorable Pittsburgh women who have received the award.
