WHEREAS, graced with spectacular views of the city and abundant green space, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood provides affordable urban living just minutes from Downtown Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, the Slopes are comprised of narrow winding streets and a network of steps interconnecting this beautiful unique hillside garden community; and
WHEREAS, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association (SSSNA) formed in 1998 with the purpose to maintain, foster and improve the quality of life, safety and unity of the South Side Slopes neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, for the past two years, in preparation of the annual Pittsburgh StepTrek, the SSSNA has organized a Trash Bash, AKA "Tire Toss". With the help of the South Side Chamber of Commerce, PA Cleanways, Tier1 and many volunteers, the Association removes tires that have been illegally dumped into the ravine off to the side of Brosville; and
WHEREAS, this year, they gathered 319 tires without rims and 70 tires with rims for a grand total of 389. There was also a great deal of trash that was bagged and piled for a later clean up date. The South Side Chamber of Commerce and Tier1 provided funding for proper disposal of the tires, which amounted to $0.75-$2.00 per each tire; and
WHEREAS, with great success, much new dumping has been curtailed due to constant surveillance by many neighbors; and
WHEREAS, residents and visitors will be able to see the Slopes at their best as they participate in this year's StepTrek, which is scheduled for Saturday, October 2, 2005.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends and thanks the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association, the South Side Chamber of Commerce, PA Clean Ways, Tier1 and numerous volunteers for their work and dedication to keeping the Slopes clean and enjoyable for all residents and visitors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that September 27, 2005 be hereby declared "South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
