Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the important work of the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania, and encourages residents of the City of Pittsburgh to assist Pittsburgh's homeless animals by adopting animals from the League, by donating funds and needed materials to the League, by fostering animals for the League, by volunteering at the League, and by any other appropriate means, to help the animals until they get a new forever home; NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby support the League's Drive for Five, and does pledge to showcase on air, prior to its weekly Standing Committee Meeting, the animals from the Animal Rescue League that are available to the public for adoption, and does advise the public that Council subscribes to the Animal Rescue League's motto: “Where Love Begins”.

WHEREAS,  the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania is a premier Open Door shelter, accepting each and every animal brought to it by the public;  and

WHEREAS,  the Animal Rescue League was founded in the year 1909 and for nearly a century has remained true to its mission:  to provide temporary shelter, food, medical attention and comfort to neglected and injured animals;  to restore lost animals to their owners or seek new homes for them; and to educate the public about the humane care of animals;  and

WHEREAS,  the Animal Rescue League East End shelter accepts an average of 8000 animals every year, including the animals accepted from the City of Pittsburgh Animal Control Division, thereby giving even those animals a second chance at a happy life;  and

                     WHEREAS, the Animal Rescue League places thousands of animals each year, all of which have been spayed or neutered, by offering pets at the League's shelter and at satellite locations at area pet supply stores;  and

                     WHEREAS, the Animal Rescue League has set a goal of saving 5,000 animals' lives this year through their 'Drive for Five';  and

                     WHEREAS, the Animal Rescue League operates a low-cost open-to-the-public clinic with surgical capabilities whereby members of the public can obtain veterinary services that they might otherwise not be able to afford;  and

WHEREAS, the Animal Rescue League offers the use of its facilities for the spaying and neutering of feral cats, thereby reducing the reproduction of animals that cannot find homes;  and

WHEREAS,  the Animal Rescue League operates a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center that is dedicated to the mission:  providing quality medical care, rehabilitation, and release to injured, sick, and orphaned native wildlife, while focusing on local and global conservation and education, and while fostering an increased awareness and appreciation among children and the public of our native species;
