WHEREAS, David Johnson was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and grew up in nearby Daytona Beach; and,
WHEREAS, David earned a degree in Broadcasting from the University of Florida and began his television journalism career with stints in Gainesville, Jacksonville, Chattanooga, Orlando, and Atlanta; and,
WHEREAS, During his time working for WSB-TV in Atlanta, David met his wife, Nancy, before moving to Pittsburgh to join WPXI-TV as a noon news anchor in January 1985; and,
WHEREAS, David and Nancy, who now live in Squirrel Hill North, are the proud parents of two sons, Michael and Eric, and adoring grandparents of two granddaughters, Lucy and Winnie-all native Pittsburghers; and,
WHEREAS, David transitioned to the evening news desk in 1989, soon forming an on-air partnership with former anchor Peggy Finnegan that became the longest-running anchor team in Pittsburgh television history until Peggy’s retirement in 2020; and,
WHEREAS, David and Peggy received the 2015 President’s Award from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania for career achievement in journalism, and were named Broadcasters of the Year in 2016 by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters, the first anchor team so honored; and,
WHEREAS, David has won several Emmy Awards, Pittsburgh Press Club Golden Quills, and various other local and regional honors during his time at WPXI; and,
WHEREAS, throughout his illustrious career, David has covered scores of local and national stories, including his favorite assignment, the Quecreek Mine Rescue, which he covered from start to finish, when all nine miners were rescued alive; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to his service to the city as a journalist, David has been active in the Pittsburgh community, having volunteered weekly for 18 years at the National Council of Jewish Women’s Children’s Waiting Room at the Family Court Building Downtown; he also volunteered for nine years at the Radio Information Service, reading to the blind and visually impaired.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate David Johnson for his four decades as a trusted voice for Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, December 10, 2024 to be “David Johnson Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
