Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Rauh Jewish Archives , the Pittsburgh Jewish-Israeli Film Festival and Ruth Westerman , niece of Samuel Rosenberg, for bringing awareness of and exposure to the remarkable work of artist Samuel Rosenberg; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Sunday, April 12, 2008, to be “SAMUEL ROSENBERG DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS,  the Pittsburgh Jewish -Israeli Film Festival seeks to promote Jewish and Israeli culture by presenting current and classic films from the United States and abroad and additionally seeks to engage audiences in thought-provoking dialogue by offering outreach programs whereby local, national and international artists and speakers are present to facilitate discussion with regards to their work; and,

                     WHEREAS, the Heinz History Center's Rauh Jewish Archives, in partnership with the Pittsburgh Jewish-Israeli Film Festival, will present Kenneth Love's new documentary , Samuel Rosenberg: Pittsburgh's Painter Laureate,  on Sunday April 13, 2008, at the Southside Works Cinema ; and,

                     WHEREAS,  Samuel Rosenberg's career as an artist and teacher spanned nearly six decades during which time his style evolved from portraits to urban landscape and American Scene paintings to allegory and abstraction and finally to abstract expressionism and creating over 500 paintings, over 400 preparatory sketches and drawings and over 100 collages ; and,

                     WHEREAS,  Samuel Rosenberg , a native of Philadelphia, located to Pittsburgh at the age of eleven, making Pittsburgh his home for his lifetime and becoming “The Dean of Pittsburgh Painters” , teaching at Carnegie Institute (now Carnegie Mellon University ) and chairing the Art Department at the Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University),claiming students such as Philip Pearlstein, Mel Bochner and Andy Warhol and through his remarkable career gaining national and international acclaim for his work; and,                 

WHEREAS, the documentary, Samuel Rosenberg: Pittsburgh's Painter Laureate, will emphasize  his evolving style and technique feature interviews with scholars and former students and reveal rare home movies .
