WHEREAS, the mission of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, driven by the needs of people with diabetes, is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research; and,
WHEREAS, Type 1 Diabetes is a disease which strikes children suddenly and requires insulin to be taken daily by multiple injections or an insulin pump, and while insulin allows a person to stay alive, it is not a cure nor does it prevent the possibility of devastating complications; and,
WHEREAS, JDRF is one of the nation's leading philanthropic organizations in which more than 85% of its expenditures directly support research and research- related education and is the leading catalyst in research and scientific developments to improve the lives of those adults and children living with diabetes today and ultimately to find a cure tomorrow ; and,
WHEREAS, locally, the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of JDRF is located in downtown Pittsburgh, serves fourteen surrounding counties and is actively supported by the passion of its volunteer parents and dedicated staff who work tirelessly to raise money through major gifts and three major events: The Walk to Cure Diabetes, the Rainbow Gala and a Golf Outing and whose efforts will realize $4 million in support of research this year; and,
WHEREAS, this year's Rainbow Gala will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at the Pittsburgh Hilton , where over 800 guests will join JDRF in a high energy evening to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for diabetes and to honor JDRF Western PA Co-Founder, Stanley Marks, MD.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the important work of the local Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and its Rainbow Gala on March 29, 2008; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, March 29, 2008, to be "JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.
