WHEREAS, Amen Corner, a historic Pittsburgh networking organization dating back to 1870, will be holding its annual Judicial Reception on April 14, 2026, where the Honorable Michael E. McCarthy will receive the prestigious Robert E. Dauer Award of Judicial Leadership and Excellence; and,
WHEREAS, Judge McCarthy is currently assigned to the Court of Common Pleas Fifth Judicial District Orphans’ Division, having previously served as a County Detective, as an assistant District Attorney in the White-Collar Crime Unit, and as an Administrative Chairman of the Court of Common Pleas Board of Viewers; and,
WHEREAS, Judge McCarthy received his undergraduate degree and Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, and is also a Vietnam Veteran who served in the US Navy Seabees, experiences that informed him as he became a pioneer in the implementation of the Veterans’ Court, a special division of the court that deals with veterans’ issues in the Fifth Judicial District of Pennsylvania; and,
WHEREAS, in 2010 Judge McCarthy received the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation Judges Award for his development of the Mortgage Foreclosure Program with the 5th Judicial District; and,
WHEREAS, other awards Judge McCarthy was honored by include the Action Housing Award in 2012, the National Irish Voice 100 Award for Judicial Leadership in 2011, the 2010 Veteran of the Year Award from Brentwood Post 1810, the Soldier & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum 2011 Friend and Patriot of the Year Award, and was named by the Pittsburgh Business Times as one of 2014’s 10 Veterans of Influence; and,
WHEREAS, in 2012 Judge McCarthy was a founding Trustee of Pittsburgh Fisher Housing Helping Military Families, and in 2012 served as the Grand Marshall of the Pittsburgh Veterans Day Parade; and,
WHEREAS, Judge McCarthy has been married to Janice Lynn McCarthy since 1974 with whom he has two daughters, Maura Elizabeth and Caitlin Lee;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 14, 2026 to be “Judge Michael E. McCarthy Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
