Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Sheriff Pete DeFazio for his outstanding public service, professionalism and commitment to the Sheriff's Office of Allegheny County and congratulates him on his induction into the International Chief's of Police Hall of Fame; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that today, December 10, 2003 be hereby declared "Sheriff Pete DeFazio Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Pete DeFazio is a 33-year veteran of the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office, who on November 4, 1997, was elected to his first term as Sheriff of Allegheny County and then re-elected in 2001; and

 

WHEREAS, Sheriff DeFazio is the first sheriff in the history of Allegheny County to hold each rank: Deputy Sheriff, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Chief Deputy and to have also supervised every division of the Sheriff's Office; and

 

WHEREAS, Sheriff DeFazio has continuously demonstrated outstanding leadership in his position.  He dramatically increased the collection of child support payments and the number of warrants cleared in Allegheny County.  He has acquired over $1,000,000 in grant funds from private and government sources; created a Canine Unit at no cost to the County; participated in developing and operating the Regional Booking Centers; and automated the civil process division of the office, as well as many other accomplishments; and

 

WHEREAS, Sheriff DeFazio holds memberships in the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 91; the Western Pennsylvania Chief's of Police Association, the National Sheriffs' Association; the International Police Association; the National Association of Chiefs of Police, the Deputy Sheriff's Association of Pennsylvania; and the Sheriff's Association of Pennsylvania; the Crime Prevention Association of Western Pennsylvania; and the National Register's Who's Who of Executives and Professionals; and

 

WHEREAS, in recognition of his work ethic and duty to public safety, Sheriff DeFazio was inducted into the International Chief's of Police Hall of Fame in July 2003.

 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Sheriff Pete DeFazio for his outstanding public service, professionalism and commitment to the Sheriff's Office of Allegheny County and congratulates him on his induction into the International Chief's of Police Hall of Fame.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that today, December 10, 2003 be hereby declared "Sheriff Pete DeFazio Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
