Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) holds its 74th Great Lakes Regional Conference (Conference) on Thursday, April 28, 2005 through Monday, May 1, 2005 at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh where approximately eleven thousand African American women will explore the theme, "Down by the River Where the Spirit of AKA Runs Deep;" and
Whereas, founded in 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C., AKA became America's first Greek-letter organization established by Black college women; and
Whereas, in addition to the members of the local graduate chapter, Alpha Alpha Omega, the AKA conference attendees will include chapters from Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Western New York and Northern Ohio; and
Whereas, the "sprit" of AKA is the ongoing act of partnering with communities to foster high individual and collective achievement through its scholarship programs, service initiatives that boast international acclaim and philanthropic support, for example: the AKA Educational Advancement Foundation's scholarship and mini-grants programs that encourage life long learning; The Ivy Reading AKAdemy,
a K-3 after school reading tutorial program with centers in the United States and South Africa; over nine AKA-built schools in South Africa, and contributions totaling more than $60,000 to the National Council of Negro Women's Mortgage Liquidation Fund, the Sickle Cell Anemia Disease Support Network and Howard University for Sickle Cell Research; and
Whereas, on April 28, 2005 as a part of the conference, several service projects are scheduled, including a Career Fair at Milliones Middle School and other events at the Jubilee Kitchen, Ebenezer Towers and Bethlehem Haven; and
Whereas, AKA continues to support "Books, Books, Books," which donates books to local school districts, during the Conference, members will donate supplies to "Every Child Incorporated," a service agency that provides luggage, book bags and school supplies to foster children in need of educational supplies; and
Whereas, the National President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Linda M. White, will be in attending and recognition is also given to the Regional Director, Dr. Pamela L. Redden, the local chapter president Barbara McCloy and the General Conference Chairperson, Toni Kendrick.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Pittsburgh City Council salutes Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated for the inroads it provides to education, health research and improving the quality of life locally and internationally on the occasion of its 74th Great Lakes Regional Conference.
