WHEREAS, Noreen O’Malley grew up in Castle Shannon with her two brothers and two sisters. She was born into a civically minded family. Her father Tom O’Malley was the former Mayor of Castle Shannon Borough and her mother Jean was a former Council Member. Noreen currently resides in the Duquesne Heights neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, Noreen earned her Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from Marywood University, and received a Master of Arts in English and Secondary Education from Duquesne University. During her college years, she played field hockey, basketball, and softball; and,
WHEREAS, she taught at the elementary, secondary, and collegiate levels as an English teacher and Gym teacher. She was the athletic administrator at Chatham University and for the Keystone Oaks School district. In the 1990s, she was also on the Advisory Committee for Chatham’s ice hockey team; and,
WHEREAS, for 35 years Noreen refereed field hockey, basketball and lacrosse, and umpired softball. She played community and rec league softball including playing for the CityFit softball league; and,
WHEREAS, Noreen began with the City on July 29, 2013, as a Recreation Leader in Parks and Recreation and she is currently the Senior Community Center Director for the Mt. Washington Healthy Active Living Center; and,
WHEREAS, she utilizes her educational and athletic training to lead with a servant's heart in order to keep our seniors safe, healthy, and active; and,
WHEREAS, Noreen is also actively involved in the Irish community and a degreed member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 21; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and thank Noreen O’Malley for her years of service to the City of Pittsburgh and our senior residents; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Monday, March 18, 2024 to be “Noreen O’Malley Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
