Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Redd Up and Green Up crews for the work that they do not only on behalf of District 2 but the entire City of Pittsburgh; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, July 10, 2012, to be “Redd Up and Green Up Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Redd Up and Green Up Crews are about taking pride in our communities by cleaning up neglected and overgrown lots, towing cars, boarding up abandoned buildings and removing graffiti; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Redd Up initiative was introduced in 2006 by the late Mayor Bob O'Connor and the Green Up Pittsburgh Program was introduced by Mayor Ravenstahl in 2007 both programs aim to stabilize City-owned vacant lots both with goals of reducing blight and public safety hazards; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Redd Up program now prepares vacant lots for reuse, including future development, greenways, parks and storm-water management and during winter season the Crew performs general DPW functions such as snow removal and pot-hole repair and are relied upon  heavily for city-wide special events; and,
 
WHEREAS, in the past four years the Redd Up crew has boarded up 289 properties and completed 138 Redd Ups removing 1,790 tons of debris and 7 Green Up sites have been completed including the Island at Middletown Road and Steuben Street and the Trolley Trail on Noblestown Road and one Love Your Block site at Lorenz Avenue and Uvilla Street; and,    
 
WHEREAS, during the "Sheraden Blitz" in August of 2010, boarded up 7 houses, cut and cleaned 16 vacant houses, approximately 35 vacant lots, cut and removed debris on 20 neighborhood streets, completed pothole repairs, paved Parson Street and prepped Stadium Street for in-house paving, prepped Chartiers Bridge for painting, removed 680 tons of debris and had 5 cars towed and 10 cars cited for towing with the help of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police; and,
