WHEREAS, since its founding in 1929, Carlow has provided educational opportunities for women, reverenced Catholic tradition and the animating spirit of the Sisters of Mercy and focused on the growth of each student as a lifelong seeker of truth and an enduring pride in the competence and compassion of its graduates as servant leaders; and
WHEREAS, the Sisters of Mercy of Pittsburgh believed that the most important work they could undertake was the higher education of women in the liberal arts for a fuller and wiser existence for opportunities for employment and careers and for acceptance into the finest graduate schools in the land; and
WHEREAS, Grace Ann Geibel, RSM, Ph.D. is a native of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Carlow University over which she presides. Her association with the university began when she was accepted as a piano student in its music department while she was still in grade school; and
WHEREAS, Sister Geible received her B.A. in piano and music education from Carlow in 1961, her M.A. from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York and her Ph.D. from Eastman School of Music in 1975. She has completed post-doctoral work at the Harvard Graduate School of Education Institute for Educational Management, and at the Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, her association flourished without interruption through her own undergraduate years, to her membership on the faculty, her co-chairmanship of the Music Department, her term as Academic Dean and finally her election as President in 1998. Sister Geibel is Carlow's eighth president; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Geibel serves on numerous Boards of Directors including the Pittsburgh Symphony Society Board of Advisor, the Urban League of Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Economy League. She has served on numerous local and national committees on higher educations; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Geibel has also received many honors and awards throughout her tenure such as her honorary doctorate of letters from LaRoche College in 2004; and
WHEREAS, on May 4th, 2005, Dr. Grace Ann Geibel, RSM will be honored for 17 years as president of Carlow University.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends and extends its appreciation Dr. Grace Ann Geibel, RSM for her continued work and commitment to education and the mission of Carlow University and congratulates her and wishes her the best on her June 30, 2005 date of planned retirement.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that today May 3, 2005 be hereby declared "Dr. Grace Ann Geibel, RSM Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
