WHEREAS, Johnny Angel and the Halos was founded by Jack Hunt and Al Lipp, who met by chance on May 28, 1966 at a friend’s birthday party in West View. Jack and Al formed a band on that same night, called the Cordells, and a year afterward, they had their first record deal managed by Al Lipp’s father, Herman Lipp; and,
WHEREAS, Jack Hunt and Al Lipp first produced a record with Steel Town Sound called “You Do a Thing to My Mind,” as the band the Cordells. After this record was produced, the Cordells gained attention for their style of music, which evolved over the years as the band gained new members and different instruments; and,
WHEREAS, Jack and Al were performing a 1950s skit on a show called Johnny Angel and the Halos, which influenced the name of their current showband. Jack Hunt took the stage name Johnny Angel, as he was the lead singer, and Al Lipp was one of the original Halos. Johnny Angel and the Halos eventually went on to produce four CDs and three 45RPM records; and,
WHEREAS, since the band’s founding, Johnny Angel and the Halos has been adaptable over the years. The band has faced difficult decisions that range from adopting a new name to expanding its size from four members to more than ten. Even through harder times when members departed and new Halos were added, Johnny Angel and the Halos kept their spirits up and their music rockin’; and,
WHEREAS, Johnny Angel and the Halos has performed in concert with many Rock n' Roll Legends and recording artists such as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, The Temptations, Four Tops, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, The Beach Boys, Martha and the Vandellas, among many others; and,
WHEREAS, Johnny Angel and the Halos is now celebrating their fiftieth year as one of Pittsburgh’s most popular oldies showbands, with yearly performances for the Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins, along with the Rock n’ Roldies Showcase, which produces Rock n’ Roll shows each year; and,
WHEREAS, Johnny Angel and the Halos is now an LLC whose partners are Jack "Johnny Angel" Hunt, Al "K.C." Lipp and Gary "Bubba" Daley. Jack, Al, and Gary are lifelong friends united by their love for music and the promise of great times to come! We love you, Johnny Angel and the Halos!; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of August to be “Johnny Angel and the Halos Month” in the City of Pittsburgh.
