Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby commend and applaud the many incredible and courageous efforts of Mr. Lamonte E. Wilson for being an instrumental force in the community and for the City of Pittsburgh. His strength is extraordinary and his triumphs are not only admirable but exemplary indeed. WHEREAS, in 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson launched Negro History Week, during the second week of February, as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history. Today, we celebrate the month of February as “Black History Month,” educating our community and youth of the significant accomplishments and barriers of our African American leaders.  This is an opportunity to acknowledge and examine the leadership, perseverance, and dedication of these leaders; and

 

WHEREAS, in March of 1996, City of Pittsburgh native Mr. Lamonte Wilson made history when he was appointed as the first African American Fire Chief of Allegheny County by former County Commissioners Mr. Larry Dunn and Mr. Bob Cramner. Mr. Wilson has continuously demonstrated the talents of a leader, both in the community and in his profession, in addition to being as a true team player. He has been an active member of a number of service oriented organizations including but not limited to: the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the National Fire Protection Agency, and the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Association; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Wilson was also nominated for the 2003 Trailblazer Award and was honored by National City Bank, along with Judge Cynthia Baldwin, for being the top savings bond sponsors for the Black History month essay contest.  In addition to his many achievements and memberships Mr. Wilson also holds the current certification for being a Fire and Arson Investigator, National and Pennsylvania State Fire Instructor and Communications Training Officer.  Mr. Lamonte E. Wilson is undoubtedly an outstanding role model for not only for the African American community but for the City of Pittsburgh as a whole.
