Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes and commends the American Radio Relay League; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby designate June 18-25, 2006 as Amateur Radio Week in the City of Pittsburgh.

Body

WHEREAS, Amateur Radio operators are celebrating a century of the miracle of the broadcast of human voice over the airwaves with their "HELLO" campaign; and

 

WHEREAS, Amateur Radio has continued to provide a bridge between people, societies and countries by creating friendships and sharing ideas while also providing countless hours of volunteer work; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh also recognizes the services that the Amateur Radio community provides to our many Emergency response organizations, including local and county Emergency Operations Centers, the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Pittsburgh Vintage Grand-Prix, Race for the Cure along with many others; and

 

WHEREAS, these same individuals have further demonstrated their value in public assistance by providing free radio communications for local parades, bike-a-thons, walk-a-thons, fairs and other charitable public events; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh recognizes and appreciates the diligence of these "hams" who also serve as weather spotters in the Skywarn program of the United States Government Weather Bureau; and

 

WHEREAS, Amateur Radio once again proved its undisputed relevance in the modern world in 2005 by providing emergency communications when other systems failed due to the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in the and also in the Tsunami catastrophe overseas; and

 

WHEREAS, the ARRL (American Radio Relay League) is the leading organization for Amateur radio in the United States, and its Amateur Radio Field Day exercise will take place throughout the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County on June 24-25 2006 and is a 24 hour emergency exercise and demonstration of the Radio Amateurs' skills and readiness to provide self-supporting communications even in fields without further infrastructure;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes and commends the American Radio Relay League; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby designate June 18-25, 2006 as Amateur Radio Week in the City of Pittsburgh.
