Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the crisis of hunger and poverty in our region and notes that Just Harvest makes a remarkable difference in the lives of our hungry neighbors through advocacy, education, empowerment and outreach ; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, October 28, 2008, to be JUST HARVEST DAY in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS,  Just Harvest is a membership organization which promotes economic justice and works to influence public policy and to educate, empower, and mobilize the citizens of our community toward the elimination of hunger and poverty ; and,

 

WHEREAS, Just Harvest- A Center for Action Against Hunger, focuses its goals around advocacy, education, outreach and organizing and empowering citizens to take action to eliminate hunger and has done so throughout its history with programs and projects such as the National School Breakfast Program, a Tax Preparation Project, the Empty Bowls Dinner, support of Farmer's Markets in Southwestern Pennsylvania through the Farmer's Market Alliance, their Women's Leadership and Organizing Project, the Hometown Hunger  research study and report , the publishing of their Welfare Rights Handbook and the Welfare Justice Project, and the influence of public policy through their work with public officials                ; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Just Harvest will be hosting its 20th Annual Harvest Celebration Dinner on, Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at the Omni William Penn Hotel  ; and,

 

WHEREAS, this year's Annual Harvest Celebration Dinner will feature author and journalist, Bob Kuttner, co-founder and editor of American Prospect magazine and co-founder of the Economic Policy Institute whose books include Everything for Sale and The Squandering of America  and whose extensive career analyzing political, economic and labor trends from a progressive social justice perspective includes writing a weekly column for the Boston Globe, appearing as a commentator on “Firing Line” and the “Jim Leher Newshour”, and teaching.
