WHEREAS, Vera Mae Williams Threet was born on August 22, 1941 to the late Ernest and Nellie Williams Sr. in Bessemer, Alabama, before her family relocated to Pittsburgh where she attended school at Fifth Ave High School and later completed her studies at the Community College of Allegheny County; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Threet was an active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where she faithfully served on the Usher Board and the Trustee Board, while also beginning her professional career with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a case worker, moving on to the Pittsburgh Board of Public Education, joining the staff at Central Medical Pavilion Hospital, and concluding her career at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; and,
WHEREAS, her service extended to the Mosiwidael Temple #1138, where she previously served as Loyal Daughter Ruler of Alpha Council #1, and was also a lifetime member and Past Grand Daughter Ruler of the National Council, as well as a longtime Trustee of the Pennsylvania State Association; and,
WHEREAS, as the ninth of twelve children in her family, which included six sisters and five brothers, Mrs. Threet is survived by her sisters Cornelia Williams and Anna Byrd, her four children with husband Raymond U. Threet Sr, Jeanette Williams, Nathaniel Williams Sr., Carmela Williams-Reese and Raymond Threet, step-children Raymond Threet, Jr., Phyllis Threet and Elizabeth Threet, nine grandchildren and eight grandchildren; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Threet was a proud member of the Speed Queens Women’s Softball Team, where she was inducted into their Hall of Fame, and also served her community as Judge of Elections, as a member of the AARP, and as an active participant with the Black Political Empowerment Project; and,
WHEREAS, known for her warm hospitality and delicious southern cooking that brought family and friends together, Mrs. Threet was a pillar of the community that inspired those who knew and loved her;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare August 22, 2026 to be “Vera Mae Williams Threet Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
