Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the National Council of Jewish Women, Pittsburgh Section for more than a century of community service and advocacy and recognizes the new slate of officers and award recipients ; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, May 6, 2008, to be “NCJW DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Section of the National Council of Jewish Women is a volunteer organization that has been on the forefront of social change for over a century and, inspired by Jewish values, takes a progressive stance on issues such as child welfare, women's rights and reproductive freedom: and,         
 
WHEREAS,  the projects of the Pittsburgh Section of the National  Council of Jewish Women over the last hundred years have met many different community needs and have included the first Free Kindergarten in Pittsburgh, Head Start, Job Corps, the Pennsylvania Vision Association,  the Jewish Community Center, Life's Work , Pioneer School, Renaissance Center, the Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure, and more recently, the Childrens Play Rooms in the Courts, the Silent Witness Initiative, The Charlie BatchPack Project and the Pic-A Bag Duffle Bag  Project for Foster and Homeless Children; and,
WHEREAS,  the Section will honor its outgoing President, Lynne Garfinkel, and welcome its incoming President, Susan Nitzberg, at its Annual Meeting to be held on May 6, 2008, at the Jewish Community Center ; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Annual Meeting will feature speaker, Vonda Wright, M.D. , Director of the UPMC Performance and Research Initiative for Masters Athletes who will speak on "How to Age Like a Champion: Exercise and Fitness for Life"; and,
 
WHEREAS, NCJW will recognize the achievements of  4 dedicated and talented women for their efforts to advance the lives of women, children and families and will present Christine Stone with the Emerging Leader Award, Judy Cohen with the Leiber Leadership Award, Laurie Gottlieb with the Presidential Award and Hilary Spatz with the Dawn Hirsch Memorial Award.
