Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Pittsburgh City Council commends and recognizes the honorees of the 2004 Black Trailblazers, Heritage Awardees, Renaissance Young Achievers, and the KDKA-TV Lift Up Awards for their tremendous contributions to the City of Pittsburgh. We also extend our appreciation to Renaissance Publications for their efforts in highlighting and profiling the achievements of the awardees. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh declares Saturday, March 27th, 2004 "Black Extravaganza and Trailblazer Awards Day."

Whereas, On March 27, 2004, Ms. Connie Portis and Renaissance Publications will sponsor the 19th Annual Black Extravaganza and Trailblazer Awards ceremony; and

 

Whereas, The theme for this year's program is "A Season of Hope".  The honorary Chairpersons for the event are Mrs. Cecile M. Springer and Mr. Charles M. Powell; and

 

Whereas, Since 1986 Renaissance Publications has recognized African Americans who have worked tirelessly in their professions - opening doors for younger generations to follow.  Those selected have made a positive impact in our community by enabling others to continue to achieve; and

 

Whereas, This year's 2004 black Trailblazers are recognized for their exemplary contributions within their fields.  The honorees are Mary Coffey, Business; Rod Doss, Media; Reverend George A. Fitch, Religion; George Simmons, Public Service; Dorcas Turner, Public Service; Tina Brewer, Art; Keith Giles, Human Service; Glenn Mahone, Esq., Law; Sandra Murray (Ph.D.), Health Education and Research; Howard Slaughter, Public Service; and

 

Whereas, This year a special Heritage Award will be presented to an impressive Community and Youth Service group comprised of M. Gayle Moss, Bill Neal, and Janice Parks.  Also being honored will be 40 Renaissance Young Achievers from area High schools and colleges; and

 

Whereas, The recipients of the KDKA-TV Lift Up Awards are Jada Grandy-Barnes, National City Bank-sponsor; Benjamin Butler, SBA-sponsor; Janeese Berry, Citizens Bank-sponsor; Mary Lee Epps,  UPMC-sponsor; Christine Cottle, PNC Bank-sponsor; and Howard Graves, Oxford Development Company-Sponsor.
