Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognize and commends Ms. Delores Johnson for her dedication and tenure, and we congratulate Ms. Delores Johnson for her outstanding service to the University of Pittsburgh and ultimately the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on November 1, 2005, Delores Johnson retired as a "Communications Support Services Specialist" from the University of Pittsburgh with over forty-seven years of service; and

 

WHEREAS; in 2000, Ms. Johnson received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence for Staff Employees. The chancellor's awards the University of Pittsburgh's highest staff honors, goes to employees who demonstrate dedication to their units and community service beyond their job responsibilities. Ms. Johnson retired with the distinction of being the University's longest-serving female employee; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1958, when Ms. Johnson began her University of Pittsburgh career as a microscope technician in the physics department's Cyclotron Laboratory, Pitt was still a private University. In 1971 Ms. Johnson moved from the physics department to Pitt's Office of News and Publications (now Public Affairs), where she has contributed to producing Pitt Magazine, Pitt Med, and other University publications; and

 

WHEREAS, from typing on manual typewriters early in her Pitt career and formatting copy on a pre-desk top publishing machine called a composer, Ms. Johnson graduated over the years to word processing and working with sophisticated, Web-based software. Ms. Johnson was a very highly respected member of each department that she worked in, both because of the accuracy of her work and because of her wonderful attitude toward her fellow employees; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms Johnson enjoyed singing and recorded in the 1960's with the Twilighters, a pop/rock and roll group that she formed with several fellow graduates of Pittsburgh's Fifth Avenue High School.  She has shared the stage with George Benson, The Skyliners, and Richard Pryor. Ms. Johnson has recorded for Dionne Warwick and the guitarist, Lee Valentine and hopes to resume singing soon with the choir at Albright Methodist Church in Shadyside.
