Body

WHEREAS, the South Side Slopes neighborhood is one of Pittsburgh's jewels with spectacular views of the City; narrow, winding streets and a functioning network of steps; homes built for immigrant workers who flocked to the mills and the factories at the turn of the twentieth century and abundant green spaces; and

WHEREAS, ten years ago the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association was founded by concerned residents who organized to draw attention to the wonderful amenities of the Slopes; and

WHEREAS, through their many regular activities, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association exemplifies its motto, “Neighbors, working together, make the Slopes a more livable, beautiful and safe community.”; and

WHEREAS, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association began advocating for the unique needs of the neighborhood, from its very start, with one of the first efforts being to lobby and work with fire and City officials to acquire smaller fire engines to better navigate the narrow, steep, winding streets of the Slopes; and

WHEREAS, the Slopes Association negotiated successfully with railroad and city officials to replace, rather than eliminate, the 15th Street and 10th Street pedestrian bridges, which connect the Slopes with the Flats and then, obtained state and city funding to install public safety lighting on both pedestrian bridges; and

WHEREAS, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association worked with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation to create and maintain beautiful gardens at Barry Street, Greely Street and two historic perennial gardens on 18th Street; and

WHEREAS, conducting neighborhood clean-ups continues to be one of the main focuses of the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association, yielding thousands of pounds of trash and recyclables, including more than 1,000 tires illegally dumped throughout the Slopes; and

WHEREAS, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association continues to promote the unique virtues of their neighborhood, strengthen community ties and foster a sense of pride among its residents;
