WHEREAS,  19 years after Michelle Fanzo, a young graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh, wrote an op-ed piece for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette voicing her concern that too many of her friends were leaving the region for better career opportunities and more vibrant cities, the idea behind PUMP continues to thrive; and, 
 
WHEREAS,  today, PUMP is positioned as the advocate for young people in this city and over the years has weighed in on and influenced many issue debates focusing on public transportation, city life, education, city finances, and more; and,  
 
WHEREAS, in 1998, PUMP joined forces with Pittsburgh Magazine to present the 40 awards to 40 people under the age of 40, known as the 40 under 40 Awards, to honor talented individuals that are positively shaping the region; and, 
 
WHEREAS,   the following forty people under the age of forty who are making this region a better place to live will be awarded on Friday, October 24, 2014, at the sixteenth annual 40 Under 40 Awards to be held at the Wyndham Grand Hotel; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,  that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and thank PUMP and Pittsburgh Magazine and congratulates the recipients of the 40 under 40 awards; and, 
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, October 14, 2014, to be "40 Under 40 Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
