Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Nancy Burns and Mirella Ranallo for their service and commitment to the residents of the City of Pittsburgh; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, November 3, 2025 to be "Nancy Burns and Mirella Ranallo Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Citywide events, neighborhood festivals and year-round recreational activities cannot happen without dedicated employees such as Nancy Burns and Mirella Ranallo, who both have over 25 years with Parks and Recreation; and, 

 

WHEREAS, Nancy Burns, a lifelong North Side resident, earned a B.A. from Chatham College and began her city career in 1997 as a Program Coordinator in Parks and Recreation’s Special Events Office. She became full-time on April 14, 1997, and was promoted to Manager of Community Enrichment Programs on January 2, 2023; and,

 

WHEREAS, as Manager, she leads art and literacy initiatives for children and families across Pittsburgh, while also supporting senior programs. In this role, she has advanced child wellness via the City’s Cities of Service Gardening Grant and the Pittsburgh Langley 21st Century Grant, introducing gardening and cooking programs at Pittsburgh Langley K-8. Now in its 50th year, the Citiparks Roving Art Cart continues to deliver quality arts experiences citywide. Additionally, Alphabet Trail and Tales promotes literacy through an annual large-scale event that brings stories to life; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mirella Ranallo, born and raised in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, attended CCAC Northside, before earning her Bachelor of Science from the University of Pittsburgh. As a child, she cherished picnics with her mother at Schenley Park, watching the new skating rink take shape and dreaming of becoming a skater. That dream came full circle in 1997, when she began her City of Pittsburgh career as a part-time rink attendant and skate instructor at the very same Schenley Ice Rink; and,

 

WHEREAS, over the next 14 years, she served in various roles including rink attendant, skate instructor, learn-to-play hockey instructor, and farmers market manager. In 2011, she was promoted to Skating Rink Supervisor, where she played a role in numerous improvements that enhanced the rink experience for both the public and staff. These included installing an elevator, renovating the banquet room, and overseeing major upgrades-most notably the construction of a brand-new rink in 2019 along with other facility improvements; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, November 3, 2025 to be “Nancy Burns and Mirella Ranallo Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
