Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Dr. Devine, a long-time resident of Pittsburgh, who exemplifies the quiet, often unrecognized champion someone whose tireless efforts enrich the lives of others and strengthen the community he serves; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, November 3, 2025 to be "Dr. Joseph E. Devine Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

Body

WHEREAS, Dr. Joseph E. Devine is the current Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Joseph E. Devine holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, cum laude, from the College of the Holy Cross (1973), a Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in History from Stanford University (1974), and a Doctor of Arts in History from Carnegie Mellon University (1984); and, 

 

WHEREAS, from 1974 to 1977, Dr. Devine taught history at The American School in Switzerland (TASIS). He joined Carnegie Mellon University in 1979 as Director of the Academic Advisory Center, later becoming Assistant Dean in 1988 and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in 2008. He also serves as Pre-Law Advisor, Director of the Senior Honors and Student-Defined Major Programs, and Secretary of CMU’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter; and,

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Joseph Devine has played a pivotal role in the success of thousands of Carnegie Mellon students, mentoring and guiding many through their college years and beyond. He went well beyond his formal duties, often securing work-study and campus jobs for exceptional students facing financial hardship, ensuring they could remain at the university; and, 

 

WHEREAS, his dedication has not only shaped countless individual lives, but also strengthened the bond between Carnegie Mellon and the City of Pittsburgh through the students he supported. CMU alumni consistently testify to Dr. Devine's longstanding and exceptional commitment to student success; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Dr. Devine, a long-time resident of Pittsburgh, who exemplifies the quiet, often unrecognized champion someone whose tireless efforts enrich the lives of others and strengthen the community he serves; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, November 3, 2025 to be “Dr. Joseph E. Devine Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
