Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Duane Ashley for his thirty-seven years of service to the City, and wish him many happy years of retirement; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of December 1-7, 2013 to be “Duane Ashley Week” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Duane Ashley, currently the Director of Operations for the City of Pittsburgh, is responsible for coordinating the core service functions of five City departments and offices: the Department of Public Works, the Department of Personnel and Civil Service, City Information Systems, the Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Equal Opportunity Review Commission.  Mr. Ashley is also charged with the oversight of three City-related authorities: the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Parking Authority, and the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority; and
 
WHEREAS, Duane Ashley has worked for the City for thirty-seven years, and has ushered in major renovations to community and senior centers, as well as major recreational attractions such as the Washington Boulevard Bike Track, the Mellon Park Tennis Center, the Schenley Oval SportsPlex, Riverview Park Soccer Field, neighborhood Spray Parks,  and other capital assets; and
 
WHEREAS, Duane Ashley has also developed fundraising strategies for local non-profit and youth-serving organizations as an independent consultant.  He served as Director of Special Events and Annual Giving for the Urban League of Pittsburgh, where he was instrumental in creating the Urban League's major annual fundraiser, The Ronald H. Brown Leadership Banquet; and
 
WHEREAS, Duane Ashley was a trustee of the Pittsburgh Child Guidance Foundation and has served as a member of a variety of ex-officio boards and commissions such as the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Allegheny County Parks Commission, the New Hazlet Theatre for Performing Arts, WQED Community Advisory Board, the Executive Board for the Schenley Park Golf Course. the Allegheny League of Municipalities Board of Directors, the National Recreation and Park Association, Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society, the Urban Park Alliance, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; and
 
WHEREAS, Duane Ashley volunteers at church functions and at St. Benedict the Moor School, further demonstrating his selfless commitment to service; and
 
WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of the City of Pittsburgh, Duane Ashley now lives in the Overbrook community with his wife Helena.  He is the proud father of Kristen and Duane, and grandfather of Augustus Robinson; and
