Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate October 6th, 2024 as Riverview Park Day as we reaffirm our dedication to investing in our green spaces by supporting the goals of the Trust for Public Land's 10-Minute Walk initiative. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 6, 2024 to be "Riverview Park Day" and October 10, 2024 to be "National Walk to a Park Day" in the city of Pittsburgh.

Body

WHEREAS, Riverview Park is home to historic assets, such as the Riverview Park Chapel Shelter, the Valley Refuge Shelter, and the Allegheny Observatory, recreational amenities and a sprawling trail network that are well-used by residents of Pittsburgh’s Northside and visitors alike; and,

 

WHEREAS, with the support of the Friends of Riverview Park, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, the Northside Leadership Conference, the City of Pittsburgh and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania through their investments, have ensured that everyone can safely travel to and from Riverview Park; and,

 

WHEREAS, ongoing projects, including the Davis Avenue Bridge project, which will link Brighton Heights residents to the heart of Riverview Park, the Grand Avenue Visioning Study, and the revitalization of the Valley Refuge Shelter, and recently completed projects, such as the Mairdale Neighborway, landslide remediation, and nearby traffic calming, all aim to ensure that Riverview Park is within a safe 10-minute walk from residents; and, 

 

WHEREAS, in partnership with the City of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, the Friends of Riverview Park celebrated a successful Art in the Parks initiative to survey, map, and recognize the trees within the park showcasing its rich history; and, 

 

WHEREAS, the annual Riverview Park Day aims to raise awareness and critical funding to restore this Northside gem; and,

 

WHEREAS, this year’s event will be a part of the Trust for Public Land’s National Walk to a Park Day and its 10-Minute Walk initiative, which strives to support City governments and community advocates in their efforts to reduce the park equity divide and make it possible for everyone to access quality parks within a 10-minute walk of their home; and,

 

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh reaffirms our commitment to working with our community partners to invest in our parks, including Riverview Park, and achieve critical park equity goals.
