WHEREAS, Michael John Allen, a senior at Seton LaSalle Catholic High School and resident of Pittsburgh, is a member of Troop 6, Screamin’ Eagles of the Boy Scouts of America under the leadership of Scoutmaster Fred Metting; and
WHEREAS, Michael is an incredibly involved talented and young person who serves as an example for his peers as captain of the varsity soccer team, which he has led the team to their 5th consecutive section title, along with contributing to their WPIA Championship title his Sophomore year; and
WHEREAS, Michael became involved with the Boy Scouts of America as a Tiger Scout in Cub Scout Pack 601, and throughout his tenure with the Boy Scouts, Michael has learned skills such as leadership, working with others, and doing service, all while living by the Scout Oath and Scout Law in his everyday life, and;
WHEREAS, Michael has past achievements that have also earned him recognition in the world of scouting, such as being the recipient of the Light of Christ and Parvuli awards, as well as the Arrow of Light achievement, which allowed him to transition into the Boy Scouts, and;
WHEREAS, Michael has gained leadership skills by serving as Instructor, Chaplain, and Librarian of his Boy Scout troop, has participated in numerous camping trips where he has gained valuable skills, experiences, and memories, and through all of this, Michael has been attentive to the younger scouts who have needed assistance for unfamiliar scouting endeavors; and
WHEREAS, this November, Michael was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at the Church of the Resurrection in the Brookline neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The Eagle Scout award is one of the most honorable awards that a young man can receive, and requires hard work to achieve this level of recognition; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his other commitments and activities, Michael's Eagle Scout project was to build a much needed set of stairs for his high school's soccer field, which included organizing a fundraiser and soliciting donations to come up with money to finance the project, organizing a group of volunteers to help with the construction of the stairs, and performing the excavation and construction necessary to place stairs into the hillside beside the field; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh thanks Michael for his hard work and dedication to serving as a model for being an engaged and effective young person, and;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby congratulates Michael on this major life achievement; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council hereby declares Tuesday, December 5, 2017, “Michael John Allen Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
