WHEREAS in 1927, Reverend Al Bailey founded and chartered Enon Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama; and
WHEREAS from these humble beginnings, Enon Baptist Church would eventually make its way North to the Pittsburgh area, thereby creating a spiritual home for generations of Pittsburghers for the past 80 years; and
WHEREAS Enon Baptist Church's various Pittsburgh locations have included a host of addresses situated on Pittsburgh's North Side and in its Hill District, with these addresses including Arch Street, Anaheim and Ossipee Streets, Pace Music Center on Centre Avenue, Soho Community Center on Fifth Avenue, Belinda Street, and finally, 110 Erin Street, where the church has been located for the past 38 years; and
WHEREAS over its eighty year existence, Enon Baptist Church has succeeded in providing a nurturing and spiritual environment for numerous evangelists, pastors, and gospel performers, affording these individuals with an opportunity to acquire and hone the leadership skills necessary in order to better fulfill their callings; and
WHEREAS because of its deep commitment to community outreach, Enon Baptist Church continues to proclaim the gospel in both its words and actions by contributing to missions at home and abroad and by caring for those individuals who are sick and home-bound; and
WHEREAS Enon Baptist Church, affectionately known as the "Biggest Little Church on the Hill," has overcome many obstacles during its lifetime and continues to remain true to its original mission by keeping its doors open to all who wish to enter; and
WHEREAS Enon Baptist Church appreciates all of its committed membership, and in particular Mother Florence Harper, a member of Enon's congregation for the past 68 years, who through her tireless efforts, devotion, and personal sacrifices, has never lost faith and continues to be a pillar in the midst.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby wish to commend Enon Baptist Church on its 80th anniversary, while additionally thanking the church and its congregants for their many years of spiritual and social service to both the Hill District community and the City of Pittsburgh in its entirety.
