WHEREAS, physical fitness and sports helps build self-confidence and boosts the overall health and wellness of our community; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, the Kumite Classic Sports and Fitness Festival is scheduled for May 27th through the 28th, 2005 at the Monroeville Expo Mart; and
WHEREAS, the prestigious Kumite Classic is the only event of its kind showcasing over 15 Major Sports & Fitness Championships under one roof. The mission of this unique and interactive health expo is to help pave the way for healthy lifestyles; and
WHEREAS, this is one of the most diverse and exciting fitness shows in the country, with over 1000 athletes from around the world and 100 health and wellness exhibitors. An expected crowd of 10,000 competitors will compete for championship titles; and
WHEREAS, these world class athletes are positive role models who encourage youth to become determined, dedicated and goal oriented with an emphasis placed on promoting good sportsmanship and attitudes in our young athletes; as well as developing a strong work ethic, perseverance and the spirit of camaraderie; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh's own Olympic Champion Kurt Angle will host "Kurt Angle Show of Strength Ultimate Teen Challenge", a competition that pits local high school athletes in a mini strong man atmosphere; and
WHEREAS, the Kumite Classic Sports and Fitness Festival will also provides an opportunity for athletes to become discovered with unparalleled worldwide media coverage from networks including ESPN International, TSN/RDS Canada, Star Sports Asia and Eurosports.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Kumite Classic for raising the level of awareness of national physical fitness and sports to enhance the overall health and wellness of our community. The Council also extends best wishes for a very successful event.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that May 27-28, 2005 be hereby declared "Sports and Fitness Days" in the City of Pittsburgh.
