Title: BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, February 25, 2003 as the “Mr. Julius Jones Day” in the City of Pittsburgh. Sponsored by Councilwoman Twanda Carlisle Co-Sponsored by Councilman Sala Udin

WHEREAS, Mr. Julius Jones is President and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA of Pittsburgh, a position he has held for 24 years.  Prior to assuming that post in October of 1979, he was the Director of Operations for the YMCA of Washington, D.C.;and
 
WHEREAS, As President of the YMCA of Pittsburgh, Mr. Jones is responsible for the operation of 17 local branches and outreach centers, and three camps, with an annual budget of over $22,000,000; and
 
WHEREAS, Mr. Jones started his career with the YMCA in 1963 as a Youth Program Director at the Johnson Branch YMCA in Jacksonville, Florida.  In 1967, he joined the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., serving an eight-year period as associated general executive, D.C. Division and Director of Operations; and
 
WHEREAS, In addition to his work as President and CEO of the Pittsburgh YMCA, Mr. Jones is very active in other YMCA and community activities including, but not limited to: YMCA of the USA Public Policy Committee, Past Chairman of the North American Urban Group, Board of Directors for Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, Board of Directors for WQED Communications, Pittsburgh Regatta Board, Pittsburgh Zoo, and many other organizations; and,
 
WHEREAS, After a lifetime of commitment to the YMCA organization, Mr. Julius Jones has announced his retirement as of March 31, 2003.  The tenacity, devotion, and passion that he expressed with his service to the YMCA, will truly be missed.    
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby recognize and commend Mr. Julius Jones for his efforts in providing social services, education, and entertainment opportunities to all residents off the City of Pittsburgh, demonstrating initiative and perseverance.
