Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends The Mt. Ararat Baptist Church for their service to the community, continued support of African-American leadership, and for recognizing these leaders for their continued dedication to making Pittsburgh a better place.

WHEREAS, Mt. Ararat Baptist Church's Community Activities Center is hosting its Eight Annual Community Recognition Celebration on Friday, September 29, 2006 to honor four outstanding community leaders whose contributions, ranging from education to social service development and entrepreneurship display an outstanding commitment to the City; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. JoAnne Burley, Executive Director of a volunteer based, multi-purpose consortium of the 10 colleges and universities located in Allegheny County, provides a means for sharing resources, insights, and information among member institutions; and engages in cooperative activities and projects; offering a common voice on matters that effect higher education in Pittsburgh and through out the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Cecilia Griffin Golden, Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA of Pittsburgh, has inspired and encouraged the growth of the YWCA as an organization and has reached out to women all over the region to ensure that social justice is met, taking pride in the many accomplishments of the women that have participated in the YWCA's progressive programs; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Theodore Roberts, Jr., Senior Location Executive for IBM Corporation and an active board member for the African American Chamber of Commence,  has dedicated himself to business entrepreneurship and to assisting African-American small business owners to achieve their potential growth and success; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Alexander Wilson, Director of Shuman Juvenile Detention Center is committed to making a difference in the lives of troubled youth and has worked to rehabilitate thousands of juvenile offenders during his career at Shuman, providing the dedication and stability that every successful social organization needs.
