WHEREAS, on the 8th of October, the Fifth Avenue High School Class of 1965 will reunite and begin the festivities celebrating their 45th Class Reunion; and
WHEREAS, Fifth Avenue High School, built in 1894
, originally operated as a large Romanesque /Gothic Revival building. When acquired by the Pittsburgh Public School System it provided a space for educating the residents located in the Lower Hill District community until its closure in 1976; and
WHEREAS, Fifth Avenue High School was the second oldest High School in the City of Pittsburgh, the first fireproof school in the state of Pennsylvania, and has been designated a historic structure; and
WHEREAS, with the enrollment growing under its former name of Pittsburgh Central High, in 1896 the school expanded. Out of the demand for a larger facility Fifth Avenue High School was established; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to the new school code for Pennsylvania enacted in 1911, Fifth Avenue High School opened as a cosmopolitan high school in 1912; and
WHEREAS, in 1921 under the direction of Dr. Edward Rynearson, Principal of Fifth Avenue, the National Honor Society was founded by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The Alpha Chapter of NHS originated at Fifth Avenue High School; and
WHEREAS, the school was a dominant force in city sports. The archer was chosen as their mascot with red and white as their colors. The symbol and colors were chosen because of the schools remarkable architecture filled with Gothic and Victorian archers lined with red and white titles; and
WHEREAS, most of this close-knit group of individuals were classmates from kindergarten onto high school, and many remain friends to this today, despite being scattered throughout the country.
