Title: WHEREAS Organized in the year 1908 in Miner Hall which is located on the campus of Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has been instrumental in making a significant difference in improving the lives of African American women and girls for the past 100 years; and WHEREAS Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s development has been influenced not only by the growth of its membership but also by the social and cultural issues which affect all Americans; and WHEREAS Throughout the years of its existence, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has placed great emphasis upon diligent scholarship, superior leadership, charitable service, and exemplary quality of character; and WHEREAS Today, the influence of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. extends far beyond campus gates and student interests, with its current membership approaching 200,000 world-wide; and WHEREAS Ivy Charitable Endowment of Pittsburgh (ICE), Inc., the non-profit affiliate of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc....

WHEREAS Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s development has been influenced not only by the growth of its membership but also by the social and cultural issues which affect all Americans; and

WHEREAS Ivy Charitable Endowment of Pittsburgh (ICE), Inc., the non-profit affiliate of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Alpha Omega Chapter, was formed in 1997 in order to provide support and charitable contributions to programs and services that assist in the growth and development of the African American community within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS On December 22, 2007, ICE, Inc., along with honorary Co-Chairs, Mike and Kiya Tomlin, will hold the Precious to Cultured Pearls Presentation Ball; and

WHEREAS The mission of Precious to Cultured Pearls is to prepare the 11 presentees, ages 15-17, for successful participation as leaders in the 21st Century by taking part in a nine month program that offers an extensive curriculum that includes sessions on preparing for the future, relationships, decision making, community service, the importance of developing healthy lifestyle habits, and support for ensuring ongoing success.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby wish to thank the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, ...
