Title: WHEREAS, Thomas E. Starzl, M.D., Ph.D is being honored at the American Liver Foundation Western Pennsylvania Chapter Inaugural Tribute to Excellence event held on Thursday, August 23, 2007 at the Longue Vue Club in Verona, PA; and, WHEREAS, Dr. Starzl is a distinguished service professor of surgery and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the director emeritus of the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; and, WHEREAS, Dr. Starzl is known as the "Father of Liver Transplantation" for performing the world's first liver transplant in 1963 and the world's first successful liver transplant in 1967, both at the University of Colorado; and, WHEREAS, Dr. Starzl can also be credited for his seminal discoveries associated with immune tolerance and innovative surgical techniques, which paved the way for an entirely new field in human organ transplantation; and, WHEREAS, as a display of gratitude The American Liver Fo...

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Dr. Starzl for his ground-shattering contribution to the medical field and thanks The American lvier Foundation Western Pennsylvania Chapter for naming this award in his honor; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, August 23, 2007 to be "Dr. Thomas 'Father of Liver Transplantation' Starzl Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
