Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Allegheny CleanWays and its dedicated DumpBusters volunteers for leading the fight against illegal dumping, and making our city and region a more beautiful place to live; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, July 30, 2013 to be “Allegheny CleanWays Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, volunteers who selflessly dedicate their time and energy towards cleaning up garbage and debris make the City of Pittsburgh more livable, and improve the quality of life for the citizens of our region; and

WHEREAS, since it was founded in 2000 as a chapter of PA CleanWays (now known as Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful), Allegheny CleanWays has mobilized hundreds of volunteers to eliminate illegal dumping and littering in Allegheny County, and clean up our natural environment; and

WHEREAS, Allegheny CleanWays has removed a grand total 1,274 tons of debris from the empty lots, roadsides, riverbanks, and hillsides of Allegheny County, including large objects such as appliances, furniture, and tires that other cleanup groups don't have the ability to haul away; and

WHEREAS, in this calendar year alone, Allegheny CleanWays has removed 127 tons of debris, including 2,536 tires; and

WHEREAS, Allegheny CleanWays' DumpBusters program consists of a small crew of trained volunteers and staff who specialize in the most severe dump sites, often with challenging slopes, and work 12 months a year; and

WHEREAS, on the hillside near Brahm St. in the Spring Hill neighborhood on Pittsburgh's Northside, Allegheny CleanWays' DumpBusters program, under the leadership of Joe Divack, has mobilized many volunteers including Hannah Grace, Abdul Alyas, Dave Limbacher, John Cokley, John Erickson, Annabel Ferguson, Laura Zurowski, and others, who made 33 site visits, and removed more than 64,000 pounds of garbage and debris; and

WHEREAS, Allegheny CleanWays has created an interactive map on their website that shows the location of illegal dump sites, and project locations where volunteers have cleaned up and hauled away garbage, thus serving as a valuable tool in the fight against littering;
