WHEREAS, Dr. Jared L. Cohon, President of Carnegie Mellon University, has worked in education since 1973 first serving as a professor at Johns Hopkins University and later at Yale University; and
WHEREAS, Cohon has worked in a multitude of academic and professional fields and has served in high ranking roles in the federal government, including as chairman of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board under President Clinton and as a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council under President Obama; and
WHEREAS, Cohon has worked tirelessly to improve and expand the University in the sixteen years he's held the position of president; and
WHEREAS, under Cohon's leadership CMU's enrollment and received applications have almost doubled, drawing thousands of new students to the university; and
WHEREAS, under Cohon companies like Google and Disney have made significant investments in the university and in the broader Pittsburgh region; and
WHEREAS, at the start of his tenure the university had no international program and it now offers degrees on five different continents and in 14 different countries; and
WHEREAS, Cohon will step down as president of the university on July 1st and Dr. Subra Suresh, former head of the National Science Foundation, will be stepping in as the new president.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Dr. Jared L. Cohon for his contributions to both CMU and the broader Pittsburgh region; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 19, 2013 to be "Dr. Jared Cohon Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
