Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 21, 2013 to be “Jazz on the Hillside Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the 9th Annual Jazz on the Hillside will take place on Friday, June 21, 2013 in the historic Hill District, a fundraiser event for the Schenley Heights Community Development Program that will feature some of the best local jazz from the bands of Tony Campbell, Harold Betters, Al Dowe and Etta Cox and Jimmy Ponder; and,
 
WHEREAS, the mission of Schenley Heights Community Development Program is to nurture, support and develop our community through wholesome programs that address the academic, moral, cultural, health, and recreational needs of our children, youth and their families in the Hill District and metropolitan Pittsburgh; and,
 
WHEREAS, this program will be dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Nancy Scott Gilkes,  who was a committed member of the Schenley Heights Community Development Program for many years and whose dedication and talents will truly be missed; and,  
 
WHEREAS, the Annual Jazz on the Hillside event is a local staple of the Hill District and the City of Pittsburgh that has provided the best in jazz entertainment every year since its inception; and,
 
WHEREAS, the 9th Annual Jazz on the Hillside is made possible by the support of local organizations such as Dollar Bank, Highmark, UPMC, Robert Wholey's and  Attornery Arthur Gilkes; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Schenely Heights Community Development Program, under the leadership Rev. Dr. Johnnie Monroe, has provided a number of programs to help children feel safe growing up for almost 20 years, as proceeds from Jazz on the Hillside will greatly assist in keeping those programs going;
