WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Playwright Theater Company was founded by Mark Clayton Southers, August Wilson's fellow Hill District native and protégé in 2003. Since its opening, the Theater Company has developed and showcased the works of accomplished playwrights like August Wilson to promising, new talents; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre brings cultural diversity to Pittsburgh Theater with its signature Theatre Festival in Black and White, creating the Pittsburgh Pride Theater Festival and through the Culture Clash series written by Mark Clayton Southers; and,
WHEREAS, this year, the Pittsburgh Playwright Theater Company celebrates their 10th anniversary season; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Playwright Theater Company will be making history this month by being the only theater company in the world to produce all ten plays of Wilson's Pittsburgh Century Cycle in ten consecutive years; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Playwright Theater Company was able to flourish thanks to the support of local organizations such as the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh Fund, The Pittsburgh Foundation, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, and the Allegheny Regional Asset District Pennsylvania Council of the Arts and it's many, many supporters; and,
WHEREAS, their goals to continually seek to nurture a racially and culturally diverse community of playwrights, directors, actors and technical specialists to hone their craft and to network creative opportunities will be ongoing; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Playwright Theater Company has been a valuable asset to the City of Pittsburgh and it is with pride that the city recognizes them for their contribution of ten years to the arts;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of June to be "Pittsburgh Playwright Theater Company Month" in the City of Pittsburgh.
