Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Haitian Families First and the McMutrie sisters for their critical and lifesaving humanitarian work; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 18, 2013 to be “Haitian Families First Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, sisters Jamie and Ali McMutrie of Pittsburgh moved to Haiti in 2002 and 2006, respectively, after years of volunteering in Port-au-Prince to help find homes overseas for orphaned children; and
 
WHEREAS, when Haiti's earthquake in 2010 destroyed their orphanage, they founded Haitian Families First to help struggling families stay together; and
 
WHEREAS, their non-profit, Haitian Families First, has provided social services to hundreds of children and parents, helping children receive nutrition, education and life-sustaining medical care, and safe housing during extended periods of need; and
 
WHEREAS, these programs work to alleviate poverty and guide Haitians toward self-sustainability, sustaining and building thriving families, even during times of need; and
 
WHEREAS, Jamie and Ali were recently honored with the 2012 Norman Borlaug Humanitarian Award, which is named for Dr. Borlaug, an innovative lifelong humanitarian whose work saved hundreds of millions from famine and in India and Pakistan; and
 
WHEREAS, the award recognizes Jamie and Ali's ambitious desire and determination and years of commitment to addressing unmet needs in the world by helping communities and those less fortunate.
