WHEREAS, an estimated one in four women and one in six men will be sexually assaulted within their lifetime; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR) is an organization that provides comprehensive, cost-free services to child and adult victims of sexual abuse throughout Allegheny County; and
WHEREAS, since its founding in 1972, PAAR has become one of the oldest and largest rape crisis centers in the country, and remains to be the only organization in Allegheny County dedicated exclusively to victims of sexual violence; and
WHEREAS, the services provided by PAAR include crisis intervention, a 24-hour confidential hotline, medical and legal advocacy, crisis counseling for groups and individuals, education and prevention programs for schools and various groups throughout the community, as well as training and consultation for mental health professionals; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, April 20, 2013, community members will gather at The Circuit Center & Ballroom on Pittsburgh's Southside, for PAAR's annual celebration, in honor of survivors of sexual violence;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the important work and contributions Pittsburgh Action Against Rape provides on a daily basis and does hereby declare April 20, 2013 to be "Pittsburgh Action Against Rape Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
